A History Forged by the Industrial Revolution

Our building’s story begins during the height of the Industrial Revolution, a period when Congleton was at the forefront of the global silk industry.

  • The Silk Era: Dane Mill was constructed in the late 18th century, built to harness water power from the nearby River Dane. It operated as a Silk Mill, a vital component of the local economy that drove the town’s prosperity for over a century.
  • A Change of Industry: Following the decline of the English silk trade after 1860, the mill adapted, shifting its output to other textile-related industries, keeping the spirit of manufacturing alive on the site for decades.

Roman Lodge Estates: Preserving History, Building the Future

In the early 21st century, the future of the historic mill was secured when Roman Lodge Estates undertook the ambitious project of its restoration and conversion.

The owners recognised the building’s architectural and historical significance, preserving key elements of its past—such as its wooden floors, ceiling beams, and industrial lighting—while equipping it with the necessary modern infrastructure.

This thoughtful conversion ensured the mill could continue to serve the local community, shifting its focus from manufacturing goods to providing office and light industrial space
